He sucks in a rather loud audible breath and as if responding to his emotions (or maybe just to the compliment), the flora he's observing seem to... brighten up? ]
[Poseidon’s fins lift and his face creases into a pleased smile as he observes the flora, and...it looks like he’s chosen to stay a bit longer. He turns from his intended passing-by course and moves into the reef proper, passing close enough by where Amphitrite is that his massive size causes water to rush past him.]
I have not seen a bed quite this healthy in some time...
Amphitrite has to grab hold of the reef so he doesn’t get swept out into the open by the rush of water. The plants and anemones all sway like they’re dancing though.
Once Amphitrite has a good hold again, he peaks back out over the coral... Poseidon is so close now and more handsome... ]
[Well don’t look now, but he’s stopped again, this time to reach out and just barely touch the kelp with his fingertips, careful not to touch the reef itself lest he damage it.]
You all are the work of a very hard working Nereid...
[Poseidon seems intent to look over everything here before he leaves, so that includes the little alcove Amphitrite currently watching him from. Normally, he might notice the presence of a lesser god sooner than this, but there is great energy that surrounds the things they take care of. It makes it hard for him to tell what is recent and what isn’t.
So he starts to head that way, his shadow plunging the corner into momentary darkness.]
[Out of the darkness zips something that startles even the King himself, so quick that he doesn’t have time to move or even react to it. It bumps right into his chest and hangs there in the water, leaving both him and Amphitrite to process what just happened.
He leans back a touch, just enough to look down at the considerably smaller mer before him, his brows raising with intrigue. Now why would he be all the way out here...?]
[And...he’s gone. And this should be Poseidon’s cue to leave, but does he? Well...
He watches after Amphitrite for a moment before swimming downwards a little, bringing forward his trident to give the dark corner of the reef a bit of light.]
I apologize...I did not mean to frighten you. I was just admiring how beautiful the scenery in here is. It is not often someone else’s work distracts from my own.
[ After a moment he pops his head back out. He’s not frightened but... he is considerably embarrassed. He can’t just ignore him now that he’s been found though... ]
N-No, I’m the one who should apologize, your majesty... that was rude of me...
[He'd made a guess on a hunch, but when it turns out to be right his expression brightens even more as he tries to encourage the Nereid to come out.]
Well, in that case it is a pleasure to be fortunate enough to meet you face to face. It is not terribly often I have the opportunity to commune with the other caretakers of the sea, as important as you all are. What you have here is beautiful!
[He freezes, his grip on his trident tightening. He prides himself on being able to (most of the time) recall his meetings with every mer big and small, adult and child...so the thought of having forgotten someone makes his tail curl and his smile to grow a bit strained, just for a moment.
Of course he could have simply forgotten but he refuses]
[It only takes a moment, then, for Poseidon to remember what he's referring to. Of course he remembers meeting the mother with so many, many children...and one, solitary son. That's not something you forget very easily.]
I see...I apologize. I would have loved to have met all of you, but...you understand that may have taken a while.
[He laughs softly, the sound clear and melodic like a bell as it echoes in the small cavern.]
Might I say, then, that it is very nice to be meeting you formally now.
[Though he's used to folks being formal with him, somehow this almost seems like an advanced formal. Very polite, but also shy...he watches as he comes out into view proper, giving Poseidon his first actual look at the little nereid.]
Mother calls me Amphitrite but Father calls me Nerites. [ because something something the only son should be named after his father something something ] My sisters like to call me “Choromatsu” though.
[That just gets another chuckle out of him as he ponders what to call this nereid himself. He almost calls him Choromatsu just to be cheeky, but he seems pretty spooked as it is...so maybe he'll just remember that for later.]
So then, Amphitrite...I hope it is not too forward of me to ask if you could show me a bit more of your work? I have some time to spare, after all.

His cheeks turn bright red and he feels his heart swell. The sea king is not just complimenting his handiwork but also praising him... he’s so happy.
So happy in fact that he’s not really paying attention and if Poseidon looked in the right spot he wouldn’t be fast enough to hide away again. ]

He quickly tries to swim away and find another hiding place but in the dark, as momentary as it is, that’s a little difficult...
He swims out in a hurry and ends up... bumping into something. ]

Pardon me...where is your hurry, Little mer?

Amphitrite turns bright red, frozen in shock...
And then very suddenly with an embarrassed “eep” swims back to the coral and hides in a hole. ]

[ fidget fidget ]
I’m the nereid that takes care of this area, i-if that’s what you mean...

Y-Yes... King Poseidon...
