[He whispers, as if he's afraid raising his voice might hurt him more, or something. He's only just now noticing the dried blood on his hand and all down his arm, which makes him go pale.]
[ He smiles again and... struggles to curl up in Poseidon's palm. In the end he make it only a little on his side before he has to stop. Even his tail, which normally he loves so much to wrap around Poseidon or himself, lays limp and lifeless. ]
You're so... warm...
Thank you... for everything....
[ He finally lets his hand drop from where he'd had it on Poseidon and his smile is, again, gone. ]
[He almost says something, then, but before he can Megami very suddenly goes limp in his palm in a way that can only be described as dead weight. It makes him stiffen, his eyes widening as he lifts the goddess a bit closer to his face.]
Megami?
[He uses an index finger to gently nudge his cheek.]
[Poseidon lowers his hands just a little, afraid with how violently they're shaking that he'll drop the goddess at some point. Because it's in that moment that he realizes...that Megami isn't going to be okay, not if he doesn't get to his lake. He's grown unnaturally cold and still, and he can no longer speak...]
No- no! Megami! Y..you are going to be alright! Hang on!
[And at that, Poseidon does the only thing he can think to do. He bodily hurls himself up onto the sand, holding Megami against his chest with one hand while he uses his other to reach for his trident. Once he manages to grab it, he lifts it up by the staff and tries using the butt end to support himself, digging it deep into the sand and pulling himself forward.
He slugs along this way for some time, until he reaches the grass and there's no easy way for him to dig into the ground anymore. He heaves and drops his trident with a clatter, resorting to using his hand to try and claw at the grass to pull himself up and forward, his tail wriggling behind himself in an attempt to move.]
Gh--just...h-hang on...
[But even Poseidon knows that this is impossible. His size and weight, coupled with the distance...even if he had the strength to pull himself all the way, Megami wouldn't make it. And even now, on completely dry land, Poseidon can feel his body weaken even further as his scales begin to dry and breathing grows difficult.]
No...no no no...
[He has to stop, collapsing on his side just a few feet from where he lost his trident, cradling Megami as he curls halfway around him. He had long since begun crying while he was dragging himself along the sand, so now he just succumbs to it...not realizing that his trident, far though it is, has started glowing.
And before he can properly get upset, something strange happens. All at once, in a flash of light that blinds even Poseidon himself, he begins to shift form. His body shrinks down and down until he can't hold Megami and he ends up falling from his hands (safely into the grass), and by the time he's able to comprehend what's going on, he's no longer his former massive size.
...and he doesn't have his tail anymore, either.
Two things have happened. He shrank down to more of Megami's size, and his tail shifted and split into two, leaving him with legs. Human legs covered in scales, but legs all the same. And while he only can afford a moment to gawk at what he's become, part of him knows why. Maybe not how, but why.
With tears still rolling unbidden down his cheeks, Poseidon lifts himself up by his arms and locates Megami once again, dragging himself back over so he can scoop his arms beneath him, overwhelmed by the feeling of being able to pick someone up in this way. But he doesn't dwell, forcing himself to move his legs, first in tandem like a fish's tail, then separately like he sees humans do. Then, with some difficulty he rolls over onto his knees, gets up onto them...and promptly falls over. This happens to him several times, even moreso once he manages to use a tree to get up onto his feet, but somehow- somehow- Poseidon gets to his new feet.
He begins to walk. He walks, he falls, he gets up and walks again as many times as it takes, carrying Megami in his arms all the while. He heads straight for the heart of the island, and sure enough the lake eventually looms in the distance in its state of disarray. He doesn't stop to look it over though, he just stumbles right into the water's edge, frogs hopping out of his way as he falls. He tumbles through the lake's surface with Megami in tow, sending both of them plunging into its murky depths.]
[ Megami doesn't move or speak again the entire way there. No matter how many times Poseidon falls he remains undisturbed, as if it may really and truly be too late for him. Even the lake right now, usually radiant still despite the solemn atmosphere, has turned black and doomed, as if dying with its patron god.
But the moment goddess and lake reunite suddenly everything comes back to life. The radiance of the lake, and most of all, >Megami. He jolts suddenly with a sharp gasp, finally being able to breathe after so long, and his body goes rigid. His tail has even suddenly wrapped itself around Poseidon's torso.
And then he settles again, not going limp but relaxing. ]
Mmmff...
[ He groans like a sleepy child that doesn't want to get up but that's better than nothing. ]
[They both remain beneath the water for some time, partly because Poseidon had been wheezing by the time he got there, and being in the lake is a lot more preferable to him than the open, dry air. However, he realizes right away that it is not water he is accustomed to. The water is not salty like the ocean, nor is the space around them as vast and open. It's a lake, so there's certainly a confined aspect to it.
Sooner rather than later, Poseidon realizes that his holding Megami is only part of what's keeping the goddess close to him. The other half is Megami actually holding onto him with his tail, something that startles him until bubbles burst from his mouth and he weakly kicks his legs until he clumsily makes his way to the surface, gasping and choking once he's realized that he doesn't seem to have the same affinity for water in this form as he used to.
Once at the surface, he makes for the water's edge until he and Megami are effectively beached at the edge of the lake, giving Poseidon a chance to catch his breath while holding Megami in his lap. His eyes dart over his form frantically as he looks him over, lifting a hand- a whole hand- to cup the side of his face.]
[Poseidon blinks and leans back a little so he can look at the goddess properly, as if he's unable to believe that he's okay enough to speak. He's afraid to do much, afraid that just handling him wrong might hurt him somehow.
He moves his hand up a touch, enough so his fingers can thread through the side of his wet hair.]
[He starts, but he doesn't make it far. He chokes up, and quite suddenly wraps his arm around him that isn't holding him up, his words almost choked off with emotion.]

Megami...what happened?

What am I to do with you...

J-just hold on...save your strength.

[ he's smiling again ]

He is okay. He is with Osomatsu and his brothers now. ...he is safe. Totoko is gone, thanks to you.

You were right, you know... about when you're a parent... protecting your family...
[ And then his smile seems to slide away. He hasn't reopened his eyes and his grip on Poseidon is limp. ]
It's... so cold, love...

[He stammers, watching as Megami grows still, and his words come a lot slower. Quieter.]
No, it...here.
[He waits for a moment, then with a dull flash his armor melts away, leaving just bare scaled hands to gently hold Megami in their palms.]
That should be better, right? I am going to stay here until you recover...it is going to be alright...
