...Dad, I don't know if you've noticed but your other sons are all jerks.
To me. Or to Karamatsu. But also to me.
[ Even HE'S a jerk to Karamatsu. ]
If they knew I got stuck in some rocks they'd sooner laugh at me than help me. Besides I leave the reef so I can get away from them and have some privacy for a while! Bringing one of them along ruins the point of that. I'd probably have to babysit them the whole time. Or deal with being constantly made fun of and not listened to.
The current's fine usually anyway, it just caught me by surprise this time! Honest.
So you say...but I am the ruler of the seas. The currents do not move unless I tell them to. Normally they should not have been so rough near the shore, but perhaps I overlooked something...
[He nudges him with his index finger, again.]
And are siblings not siblings if they are not jerks to one another? You all would do well to do more things together! It is how you bond!
[ He flops down onto his side, partly because he's tired of sitting up and also because he's just tired in general. Again, he's not looking at Poseidon, but off into the distance. ]
I... it's nice but...
[ Does he like it? His brothers definitely do. They love having nothing to worry about and just being able to play all day, care-free. And there's something about that he likes too. And yet... he can't shake himself of the feeling of longing for something else. Something different. Something beyond this little, comfortable and safe life.
[ No. God no. If they get their own rooms he is NOT sharing with Osomatsu.
He sighs though. He really doesn't want to be having this conversation, because he knows Poseidon is either going to take it VERY BADLY or be oblivious like a bag of rocks about it. ]
[When he repeats the word this time, it is not with the simple, gentle confusion that he usually carries in his tone when he genuinely doesn't understand. The word leaves him in a particularly tense, almost clipped sort of way. One with complete understanding.
He tips his head down a little, his eyes solely on Choromatsu now.]
What humans do and, what we do, do not intersect, my son.

[He replies simply, twisting and turning his way down a long, narrow cavern that leads to their home.]
I never said that we were not also prone to cruelness, but even you and your brothers have seen some of the most minor affects humans have on this world. Pollution in both the ocean and on the land...overfishing, wrenching entire ecosystems from the waters. That does not even scratch the surface.
[It doesn't even mention...other fears he has had, concerning humans.]
They do not need defending. They know what they do.
[Poseidon makes a face, his tail kicking up sand as he breaks through the end of the tunnel into the winding maze of coral and anemones that make up the rooms of where Choromatsu and his brothers live.]
Reason with them about what, exactly? Throwing garbage into the water? What do you think might happen if one of us spoke to a human?

He swats at the index finger. Not hard (not that it would matter with his size) but enough to be like "cut that out". ]
We've spent our entire lives "doing things together". If anything we more space away from each other... more than we're getting in this reef anyway.
no subject
But...sometimes when it comes to social interactions...that's where things go pear shaped. Especially with his own children.]
...I thought you liked living in the reef?
[He asks, his fins lowering a touch.]

Something more. ]
...I think I might have outgrown it.
no subject
Poseidon gasps, suddenly.]
Well! That is simply fixed! We could just move to a larger reef, with more space!
1/2
[ ah yes this sure is the Shout Child ]

[ yet also a Thoughtful Boy ]
no subject
It would be nicer, non? Perhaps then you could all even have your own rooms!
[They didn't have their own before, for....some reason...even though he has literally all the power to make it so they could.
It's probably literally just because he thought they'd be happier together. All the time.]
no subject
Mm, Osomatsu-niisan might pitch a fit if that happens though. Or act like it's the best thing ever and then cry on his first night alone.
[ translation: Osomatsu is a stupid baby ]
no subject
Osomatsu could share a room with one of the others if it bothered him that much...
[Like.......a certain green mer he knows.]
no subject
He sighs though. He really doesn't want to be having this conversation, because he knows Poseidon is either going to take it VERY BADLY or be oblivious like a bag of rocks about it. ]
I mean, the size still isn't the problem dad.
[ How long can we keep beating around the bush ]
no subject
What is it, then? You can tell me.
no subject
[ He's gonna freak out. He knows it. But it's worth a shot. ]
no subject
[....you're not inspiring confidence in him by saying that, though.]
no subject
Dad... I'm talking about being independent.
no subject
[He repeats, as if he doesn't understand the meaning.]
You mean...live out all on your own? What on earth for?
[Says the great being of the sea who has never had children before now.]
no subject
I'm not a guppy anymore. [ repeating himself purposely ] I'm an adult... I feel like I should be working towards independence and living my own life.
That's what humans do at this age, right?
[ ah
the H word........
how do you even know that about humans... ]
no subject
......humans?
[When he repeats the word this time, it is not with the simple, gentle confusion that he usually carries in his tone when he genuinely doesn't understand. The word leaves him in a particularly tense, almost clipped sort of way. One with complete understanding.

What humans do and, what we do, do not intersect, my son.
no subject
well he hasn't freaked out yet... maybe pushing this will be okay..... ]
...But why?
We don't... we don't seem that different.
no subject
[His tail flicks through the water as he turns and starts to swim back towards the inner caverns of the reef again.]
Our similarities lie in appearances and few other traits alone, and even then there is not much to speak of.
no subject
There's no way all of them can be like that though! And not all merfolk are saints themselves!!
[ I mean, Iyami is... around..... ]
no subject
[He replies simply, twisting and turning his way down a long, narrow cavern that leads to their home.]

no subject
...Do they really?
How do they if all we do is hide from them? We don't even try to reason to them.
It's... it's not fair. Not all of them can be that bad.
no subject
