[He believes you Choromatsu...you would never lie to him, after all.
After a moment, he draws his hands away and looks him over, seeming to be relatively content with the dressing of his wounds. They aren't bleeding at least, so there is just a matter of them healing from here.]
Now I want you to promise me that you will not venture far from this reef until those cuts are healed. But after that, I encourage you to find your friends again. I am sure they are wondering where you are all the same as you are wondering about them.
[...please never tell him your friend gave you a sick human knife.
That question causes Poseidon to tilt his head a little in thought. That was a tricky question. Of course he has no way of knowing this is a human boy, and not a mer, so finding something that a mer couldn't find at the bottom of the sea is going to be pretty hard to come by. But after a moment's thought, he moves to gently set Choromatsu onto his shoulder as he swims his way out of his childrens' section of the reef and into another part, which is less of an actual room and more of a cavern of sorts.
Inside the cavern lies all sorts of various flora and fauna, but something like a seashell or even a rock or gem isn't what he's looking for. Instead, he sweeps low to the bottom of the sea floor, taking a huge breath and blowing away a cluster of sand piles in one corner of the cave. He reaches out to unearth something glittering underneath it all, brushing the sand away further.]
These are one of my pairs of gauntlets I used to own that unfortunately became too damaged for me to use given the strain they would have been going through. They are quite bent, but they have not yet lost their shine.
[Poseidon passes a hand over the massive hunks of gold, and with a momentarily blinding flash of light, the otherwise too-large gauntlets shrink down to a size more suitable for a civilian. Then, he picks Choromatsu up off his shoulder and holds him down so he can pick them up.]
If you find him again, you may give him these. They will deflect almost anything.
[ Choromatsu's eyes are wide when they enter the cavern. He'd never been here... maybe tried to sneak in once or twice as a little kid but had never actually made it inside, so everything in here catches his eye and gets his awe. Actually being in here for real leaves him speechless and he almost slips off Poseidon's shoulder once or twice.
When he sees the gauntlets his eyes manage to go even wider but he doesn't quite follow what Poseidon is getting at until he shrinks them. When he's lowered to them it takes him a moment to timidly swim towards them, still in disbelief. He starts to reach out for them, but is suddenly overwhelmed with guilt; guilt that his father is offering him such a nice thing to give to someone he doesn't even realize is human.
He continues to hesitate, turning his head back to Poseidon. ]
A...Are you sure? That I can have something so special to give to... a stranger?
[Poseidon's expression softens as he watches Choromatsu falter, as if he's not really sure if he should accept them or not.
Though he has always been blinded by love for his children, he isn't completely unaware. After all, he rules the entire ocean. He would have to have some sort of insight, or else the world would not have been in existence for as long as it has. He knows well enough that his sons struggle to make meaningful relationships with others...so to hear that Choromatsu is really trying to makes him want to help him succeed.
He reaches down and tucks his index finger beneath Choromatsu's chin, tilting his head up slightly.]
A friend of my son's is no stranger, but also a friend of mine. Give them to him with my regards.
[ For a brief moment Choromatsu has hope. Hope that he can one day actually tell Poseidon the truth. Introduce him and his new friends. "This is the human that saved me" he'd say. "These are the humans that are my friends" he'd explain. And maybe just like that everything will be fine. His father will understand, his faith in humans will be justified... maybe they'll be able to get along with all humans. It won't matter that he lied.
He would be so very wrong.
He smiles and breaks away from his father to scoop up the gauntlets into his arms, turning back around again once he has them. ]
[ He nods, and then swims back into Poseidon's palm again, regardless of whether it's extended to him or not. He lays on his side and curls up, hugging the gauntlets tight to his chest.
Guess you gotta carry him back dad. For someone who keeps saying he isn't a guppy anymore he sure likes to be spoiled when it's on his own terms. ]
Poseidon gladly picks Choromatsu up once he's settled into his hand, lifting him up close enough so he can veeeery carefully kiss the top of his head. Then, he turns around and starts to swim back into the upper parts of the reef where the rest of his brothers are no doubt already sleeping, but also probably so out of it that they haven't missed their brother's presence.
It's all in a day's work for Poseidon since those little babies hatched what seems just yesterday...but he has no idea that he's only helped to move along something he never wanted to happen.]
[ Choromatsu groans when he's kissed mostly out of instinct (because "ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad") but otherwise makes no other complaints. His eyes are already shut once he had snuggled his father's hand and they stay closed the whole way. Somewhere along the way he drifts to sleep, still hugging those gauntlets. He doesn't even stir when he's placed with his brothers.
Before Poseidon sets him down though he might notice something sticking out of the back of Choromatsu's sash. ]
[Ever since they were born, Poseidon had set up a very secure place among the maze of coral for his sons to sleep. They slept all in a row in a clamshell lined with all of the soft things he could find, so it was no wonder that most of them would sleep all day if allowed. Before he can get Choromatsu settled, however, he does notice something out of the corner of his eye there...and at first, he wonders if he'd missed an injury. Or maybe one of those seaweed wraps had already started coming loose?
Either way, he carefully uses a finger to lift up the sash a little so he can take a better look.]
[ So uh. That's a handle. A handle that is curved in such a way that even without the sheath hiding the rest of it, it's clear that it belongs to a SICK KNIFE.
And judging by how smooth the material is and how it doesn't appear to be made of rock like something a normal mer might make, it's more than likely a human knife. Of the hunting variety maybe?
[For a long moment. Poseidon just...stares at the object, an object that becomes obviously apparent that it is a knife the longer he examines it. He knows he's too large to be able to pull it from its sheath without waking Choromatsu up, but he doesn't exactly need to, really. Because he's seen plenty of human artifacts. From sunken ships to the things they hunt with...he's seen it all.
It is a very slim chance that Choromatsu would just randomly happen upon a human knife like this, especially since he knows he and the others will sometimes collect shells at the beach, or explore sunken ships. But it would be in worse condition if it came from wreckage...and even then, it doesn't look worn at all. Like it was never exactly lost in the first place.
It's. ...a disturbing revelation, one that shakes Poseidon to the core just moments after he had that heart to heart with his son. Now, he's not sure what to think. But he...no. No, it's not possible. That isn't it. Choromatsu just...found it, somewhere, probably. And though he could take it away now- and probably should- he stops himself from doing so.
No. He will let him sleep. But what Choromatsu has done now is put eyes on himself, having made his father wonder.
Poseidon's tail lashes through the water as he turns and makes for the surface. The people of the city would probably find unusually high tides tonight, for some reason...]
