[ it takes a long time for Megami to wake up. Longer than he himself might have originally thought in fact. It's not just the loss of the lake's powers (his father's power, he now realizes) that he has to adjust to, but also the salt water he failed to take into account. And so nearly another whole month passes that he spends soundly asleep.
Though his family need not worry too badly. His breathing and heartbeat stay constant, and he never becomes that sickly pale colour he was when Poseidon found him that night on the brink of death. Occassionally he even mumbles in his sleep, usually things about frogs, or being cold, or about Poseidon himself. Sometimes he even responds back if anyone tries to talk to him when he gets like that, but it's all nonsense and he never awakens.
One day though, his eyes finally reopen.
He blinks them a couple times, trying to readjust to how much darker the seafloor is, tries to figure out where he is, and when he doesn't right away he sits up immediately, heart racing as the events with Adranus as still fresh in his memory. But then he realizes he's still in water... and his heart eases once he notices all the little trinkets and shells surrounding him that could only have come from his sons. Even a brand new seashell crown lays softly next to where he'd been resting his head, waiting for him to don it once he woke up.
He smiles then, reaching for the crown and holding it close, not yet wearing it so he can admire the craftsmanship of his children fully and then hug it to his chest.
He's home. He's finally home.
But then... where was his beloved? Their boys...? ]
Poseidon...?
[ He calls out into the cavern, only realizing a moment too late that the sea king could be anywhere right now... ]
[When Megami wakes, he'll find that it's sometime during the middle of the day. Sunglight gently streams in through the ceiling, though it's definitely got a different hue compared to the way things are up on the surface. Inside Poseidon's room is quiet, probably deliberately so to let Megami rest peacefully. Outside, there are distant sounds of people talking, other mers perhaps...
Then, a little flash of color zips past the entrance, and then is seemingly gone. Then, about ten seconds later, it comes back. A young mer staring wide-eyed at the river goddess, his various shell jewelry being buffeted gently by the water. He doesn't say anything for a long time, just staring.
...then, without warning, he swims toward Megami as fast as his fins can carry him, throwing himself into Megami's arms with his own outstretched, seemingly heedless of the fact that he literally just woke up. He wraps his arms around his neck anyway, exclaiming loudly:]
Mom's awake!! Mom's awake!!!
[As if on cue, five other mers appear one by one, all clustered around the entrance like they're afraid to come in. Then, they all abruptly scatter, someone saying something about going to find Dad while Megami has to contend with Osomatsu clinging to him...and soon after a few other stragglers follow, like Jyushimatsu, and Karamatsu.]
You know. This should probably give him a headache. USUALLY this much activity after just waking up would.
But it's his son, and he can see the rest by the entrance. His sons that he created himself are here with him, and he can see them whenever they want, and Osomatsu is so excited and...
How could he not be equally ecstatic? ]
Osomatsu...!! [ He wraps his own arms around the eldest son and gives him a tight squeeze ] Oh, my little tadpole...!
[ He presses a kiss to Osomatsu's forehead ] I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long... Ah! Jyushimatsu! Karamatsu! [ Upon seeing the other two coming closer he unwraps his arms from Osomatsu and opens them to invite the second and fifth sons into the hug as well ]
[Jyushimatsu doesn't need convincing, nearly jostling Osomatsu away in his haste to cling to Megami, whereas Karamatsu seems a bit more shy about joining in. But it doesn't take him long to come over, and soon enough Todomatsu is whining because he wants the attention that his eldest brothers are getting. Ichimatsu and Choromatsu, meanwhile, have taken up the task of going to find Poseidon themselves. Of course, it's unlikely that Poseidon doesn't know something isn't happening...not with how in tune with the sea he usually is.]
We never thought you'd wake up! We thought you were gonna die!
[He says, as delicate as a semi-truck.]
Die, die!
B-but we didn't really think that! We knew you would be alright!
[Todomatsu elbows Osomatsu in the ribs about that time, earning himself a bark of indignation. The pink mer ignores Osomatsu and uses this opportunity to fit in the space Osomatsu left, curling up close to Megami's neck and sticking his tongue out at Osomatsu.]
[ THERE ARE SO MANY BABIES HERE NOW FOR MEGAMI TO HUG AND SMOOCH....... when it becomes difficult for him to hug all four with his arms his tail comes up to gently wrap around all four instead. He feels like he should reprimand Todomatsu a bit for elbowing his brother like that but he's too excited to have them with him right now that he lets it slide, nuzzling his cheek against Todomatsu as if to tell him he's right here and there's no reason to fight, and then giving each of them forehead kisses like he gave Osomatsu. ]
W... Was it really that long? How long was I actually asleep boys?
[ If y'all thought he was dead after two nights or something he gonna give you a Mom Look ]
[They seem to be contented somewhat by his tail, though it's obvious that being in his arms proper is prime real estate. But at Megami's question, they exchange glances with one another, then look to Osomatsu to actually spill the beans.]
[They all nod in unison. Clearly they're not joking. And since Osomatsu seems to be the designated mouthpiece for the time being, he continues for them.]
Yeah, uh...Dad told us not to bother you, but after a week we didn't really wanna wait anymore...and Dad didn't stop us, so I guess it was okay?
[It was more due to him feeling bad for them, not knowing how long Megami would be unconscious for.]
Dad's been gone a lot, so...
[He's been doing his duties around the ocean, but more importantly...he's been patrolling the sea, watching for Adranus. Absolutely forbidding his children from coming to the surface for the time being, with legitimate reason for it beyond being human racist.]
[Karamatsu chimes in, lifting his hands to play nervously with his bangs.]
Yeah, sure, but we don't know where he goes during the day anymore, do we, Karamatsu-niisan? They'll probably come back without him.
[Jyushimatsu says nothing, but he seems in agreement with the rest, and just as conflicted about it too. Poseidon hasn't really divulged his exact reasonings for the danger of the surface...only that it has to do with another god that they do not know. And they know better than to try and be brave against other dieties when they themselves remain mortal.]
[ He sinks a little at that. It's... a bit silly how his heart aches over this. He's surrounded by his children and that should be enough for him... but something in him had hoped to wake up with Poseidon right there at his side, and now that they are for sure to be wed, he's even more eager to see his beloved. The longer he goes without, the more he wants to see him.
The fact he presumes he's out taking care of Adranus doesn't soothe this longing any at all. ]
[They all go silent for a moment, exchanging looks again as if they're having a conversation that Megami can't hear. But before they can say anything else, Choromatsu and Ichimatsu return, only to report that Poseidon is...well, nowhere they can find. And that probably tells Megami all he needs to know.]
T-that's okay! We'll keep you company until Dad comes back- won't we?
[The others nod in unison with Osomatsu as they all find seats either on or around Megami's tail, literally surrounding him as they watch both the goddess and Osomatsu expectantly.]
He usually comes home when we're all in bed n'stuff...so maybe he'll be back in a couple hours? It's already getting late, right?
[Lateish, anyway. It's probably still a few hours off from sunset...and who knows what the sea king is in the middle of.
But seeing as they all have Megami to themselves for the moment, they don't seem too bothered by Poseidon's absence now that the goddess is awake. After all, they've never had another parent...and having Megami here is a lot more exciting than having to go visit him on the dry land.]
[ He rests back down in the bed, sitting up against the edge of the shell, because despite how long he did sleep he's still a little drained and not completely up for long periods of being up and about yet. Choromatsu has picked for himself a spot where he can be as close to Megami as possible, having taken a very liking to him after they finally got to meet and say just how similar they were. ]
It seems I have a whole month to catch up on... why don't you all fill your mother in on what you've been up to, hmm?
[Ah, well...if Megami wanted all of them to start talking in unison in response to that, then that's what he'll be getting. Seems that they're all eager to tell him about what they'd been doing, which really isn't much to write home about...they're adults now, but they all still live at home and don't do too much otherwise. They spent a lot of time making his crown, though Poseidon hadn't actually divulged what happened to the first one...only that it got broken somehow, too badly to actually fix and be worn again.
And as they talk Megami's ears off, the evening wears on and day turns into night...and by the time they've exhausted their stories, they've started dozing off curled up among the river goddess' coils.
Not long after they start falling asleep, Megami might notice a huge shadow pass overhead.]
[ Megami is more than happy to listen to them, enjoying even the mundaneness of their lives. As they start to doze off, he wraps his coils around them to keep them warm and comfortable, a little sad to now be in silence.
Then he notices that shadow.
...Okay either that is something big like a whale or... ]
[Megami is going to experience a lot of "oh god whale" while he's living down here, but suffice it to say it is not a whale this time. The shadow is over as quickly as it comes, and there's a telltale sound of scales shifting as someone swims through the connecting coral reefs to get to their rooms proper.
It's Poseidon, no doubt about that. But he's moving slowly, laboriously...like he's been gone on a very long trip and just got back. He had scanned the reef entrance first before actually moving inside, not entirely keen on his sons seeing him the way he is right now. It's unfortunate, then, that he doesn't realize that not only are the children in his room, but Megami is awake and with them also.
Poseidon swims into the room without seeing Megami at first, but it doesn't last when he turns away from the entrance and looks over to see his beloved curled up with their many children.
The sea king is covered from head to tail-fin in soot, and one of the sharp tines of his trident is completely broken off. The right side of his face is further coated with soot and ash, his eye temporarily sealed shut by it all. The rest of him is haggard in some way or form, his armor dented and broken in places. But when he sees Megami up and about, he loses his balance in the water and falls forward against his trident, spearing the butt-end into the sand to hold himself upright.
When he breathes out his name- quiet, to not wake the children- it bleeds relief.]
[ When he sees Poseidon at first his face lights up with happiness so plentiful he feels like his chest will burst. But then he notices the state he's in and his face quickly shifts to one of distress and worry. ]
Poseidon...!
[ He quickly, but carefully, uncoils himself from the children, making sure not to rouse them from their slumber. Once he's free of them he bolts through the water, a little wobbly as he hasn't been active in a month and because the sea moves differently from the lake, but he doesn't care. He goes right up to Poseidon's face, reaching his hands out as if wanting to touch him but not sure where. He is trying to be quiet for the sake of their sons but he can't help the panic in his hushed voice. ]
Are you all right...? What happened?!
[ Though considering all the soot and ash he can... already guess. ]
[He uses his trident as a sort of crutch, still able to swim but obviously weak. He's his full size as of right now, though, so all he really has to do is reach out and scoop them up in his hand three at a time.
Once he's gotten them all on board (even asleep, they sort of reflexively wiggle their way into his hair when he moves them near it), he looks back to Megami.]
Wait here.
[And then he disappears into the caverns outside to deposit the boys in their room. It takes him a whole five minutes to return, probably a century for Megami. When he finally does return, though, he's smiling. Regardless of whatever pain he feels, he's smiling, and he doesn't stop until he's made his way all the way over to where Megami is, biting back what sounds like a barely concealed sob.]
[ HOLY SHIT HE REALLY DOES CARRY THEM IN HIS HAIR this is not the time for Megami to be wowed by this but he can't help it.
After Poseidon leaves he goes back to where the shell bed is, sits by it and waits for Poseidon to return, fidgeting with worry. When he finally comes back he rises back up into more of a standing position, still worried but smiling himself as Poseidon comes to him. ]
You did...and I believed in you a-and your promise.
[He sighs as he moves over and lays himself down next to Megami's makeshift bed. Megami probably hasn't had enough time to survey the room to realize it, but...the shell is actually resting on top of where Poseidon sleeps. Poseidon's bed is much, much larger, made to fit him at full size. It covers an entire shelf of rock, lined with yet more seaweed and other various soft sea flora.
He lays his trident down carefully, wincing when a crackle of energy gathers on the tines before fizzling out, leaving him to lay his head down on the bed near Megami.]
I am sorry, I...I was not here to see you wake. As you can see, I may have...gotten into a bit of trouble...
[ He moves from the shell and goes over to Poseidon's face, placing a hand delicately on the darkened side and carefully trying to rub away a bit of the soot and ash ]
Oh love...
[ It kills him to see him like this. It kills him whenever he's reminded that the sea king is not so invincible after all.
He's quiet for a moment, his eyes darkening considerably. ]
[He closes his eyes for a moment as he feels Megami rubbing away the soot. Now that he has a closer view, he'll see a lot of what that stuff caked onto him is. It isn't just ash...it's molten rock. Rock that had once been liquid lava, solidified after being supercooled by the water.
A lot of his body is covered in fine layers of rock like this, actually. It explains why he was struggling to swim, and also why he can't see out of one eye at the moment.]
He knew I was coming. He had been...expecting it. He was confident that if he swallowed me quickly enough, I would not have the chance to retaliate.
[His expression hardens as he remembers it...Adranus' absolute rage and indignation towards Poseidon, as if he'd stolen something that he believed rightfully belonged to him. Adranus wanted to kill Poseidon. He wanted to kill him, his children, and anyone else who stood in his way.
But Poseidon was stronger than Adranus, and some part of the god knew this.]
But...he underestimated my anger. Nor did he realize that the sea now resides much closer to your island than it once did...
[His gaze travels down himself as he lifts up his tail, the fin torn in a few places.]
I sealed him in that cave he drove you into, allowing the tide to slowly fill it with water.
[ Seeing it closer now horrifies Megami, and hearing about it makes him angry. ]
He was always an idiot...
[ But it also fills him with a certain kind of satisfaction... and relief too of course but nothing pleases him more than to think the person who murdered his people, tried to own him and threatened his family, did all this to Poseidon, went through a painful end becoming of him. ]
How fitting. He is dead then? I imagine a cave full of water is not a thing any fire god can survive.
