[Peko tenses up again at first, more noticeably; her spine straightens and she holds the box closer as not to drop it, though not so close as to pull it away.
But then Choromatsu is questioning her sincerity!! Something like that she might be admonished for, but she understands what it feels like to believe you don't deserve gifts. It isn't her sincerity in question at all, is it?
Peko swallows and draws her lips into a line, deciding that's what it is, and tries to soften up. It's a bit forced, but she leans forward again sorry she's tol, senpai at the waist just a touch to make herself seem smaller and more approachable, looking at him through the top part of her glasses.]
I am. [And she even extends her arm forward a little more.]
I understand if they aren't to your taste... but I mean it sincerely when I say that I am grateful.
[Her eyes soften a bit, too, and one side of her mouth pulls into an awkward.... tilt. She's giving it her best shot here.]
[ At the possibility that his shock might be misinterpreted as meaning he doesn't like or want them, he quickly reaches out and takes the box, holding it close like something incredibly precious. ]
I-I-It's not that they're not to my taste...!! They're definitely to my taste! Any chocolate from you would be!!
[ He's being... really... loud... embarrassingly loud. But he doesn't care. This is an important moment in his life!! ]
I-It's just... no one's...
[ Wait.
Wait wait wait.
Is he
Crying
...
...he's crying.
Hes's definitely crying. And he's clearly trying not to cry, but it's not working.
He wipes his eyes roughly and cuts himself off there before he can embarrass himself further. ]
[Well, at the very least, that gets more of an expression out of her; Peko's eyes widen in concern when she sees those tears, which is also very confusing to her considering that the line 'Any chocolate from you would be!' had sent a rosy flush into that pale face of hers (What a thing to say! And about her!). With that strange combination of feelings flipping pancakes on her stomach, Peko averts her gaze for once and covers her mouth, doing her best not to bring attention to Choromatsu's tears.]
I.... [Ahem!]
You're welcome.
[She forces herself to say through her embarrassment, crossing her free hand behind her back.]
[When Peko looks up again it's to Choro's big, bright smile, and Peko... well. It isn't as though she's relaxed; she pushes a lock of hair absently behind her ear as the only sign of her nerves, but people's smiles... That was more of a thank you than any word could be. Something as powerful as that...]
Mmm. [She confirms with a short nod, watching Choromatsu's face.
She's not sure if it's what he's into, but seeing cute frog-head shaped matcha chocolates at the same sweets shop she'd purchased chocolate for someone who absolutely Does Not Like or Eat Sweets at All, she'd thought of Choromatsu. Big, triangular smiles on each simply-decorated green candy's face had put the idea of the gesture into her head, and it seemed appropriate.]
It makes that fiery red calm down and soften into something warmer, less harsh, and the corners of Peko's lips pull gently, naturally, just a little bit. With her hand still in front of her mouth but now hovering much more gingerly above it, fingers only slightly masking the whisper of a smile on her face, Peko responds--]
I'm glad. I thought they were cute, too...
[Frogs aren't fluffy but these chocolates were so cute!!! (⁎ᵉ̷͈ ॣ꒵ ॢᵉ̷͈⁎) ]
[And that was the moment that she REACHED OUT IN RAGE TO CONDEMN HIS PERVER---
nope, actually, Peko's response is kind of cuter. Flushing red and standing straight again she takes a step back, brows furrowed just slightly-- more concerned or worried looking than angry.]
Wh--what?
I-I-- [Yes, stammering, that's very good communication] What-- a strange thing to say!
[She'd like to go bury herself underground now pls and thanks]
[ He's bright red now too... god, he can't believe he said that out loud. If his brothers really did follow him somehow now would be a good time to stop biding their time and just kill him already.
...But considering how cute her reaction is, maybe it was worth it. ]
Ahh.... hahaha... w-was it?
[ He doesn't really understand that she might mean it as a strange thing to say about her ]
I guess... i-it's sort out of character... f-for me to say something bold like that...
[ His voice is cracking badly, raising a higher pitch than normal. Good lord someone help this disaster child. ]
[Peko can feel her head heating up all the way down to her shoulders. The words are just getting stuck under all these conflicting feelings-- feelings she isn't even supposed to have! This was supposed to be an easy gesture of appreciation and shE HAS TO G O]
I should get going.
[She steps back again, and bows quickly, more to hide her face than anything.]
Mm.
[wow that was a good attempt at a word she's just going to straighten back up and TURN AROUND]
[Peko stops on command, almost too reflexively, and stands straight to look over her shoulder.
Her expression is unchanging for a moment-- red irised eyes wide but otherwise cold-- as she turns to face him again. The change is subtle; her brows knit at the center by just a hair and her head tilts a degree to follow as Peko lets herself take an instinctive step forward.
Choromatsu (and his brothers, if they manage to give her more than a frightened 'hello' during the day) is so much softer than the perople she's grown up with. Around Natsumi and Fuyuhiko, Peko's façade was easy to maintain. Choromatsu could be so soft, though, that he reminded her of when Natsumi and Fuyuhiko were younger, when her treasured masters would smile, and when she could still smile with them. It's so much easier to lose sight of the tool she's supposed to be.]
No.
[She urges, clear, distinct. She can't let him feel bad for this, she's the one all out of sorts, she's the one losing sight of things. But if she messes this up, if she's responsible for making him sad...]
No, I'm--- sorry, I should be the one apologizing.

S-Sorry... I-I'm being a really uncool senpai, a-aren't I? B-But... I'm just so happy...
[ He looks back at the box, looking it over more closely. It's... so cute... even the ribbon is adorable to him. It feels wrong to untie it but...
He looks back up again. ]
Is it... okay to open it now?

[ Gosh, he's so happy. He can't think of another time he's ever been so happy in his life. Getting chocolates from girls truly is the best. ]
I'm almost afraid to eat them now, they're so cute!
