[ The sound of a splash makes Dia's head snap up -- she half-expects to see a swimmer returning to shore but there doesn't seem to be anyone in the vast expanse of the sea. She doesn't get the feeling she's being watched but...
She stares out across the water for a few moments longer before giving a short huff and going back to setting out her picnic. There's no need to be so jumpy. She's all by herself, isn't she? And she came out here to relax. Maybe she's a little more tightly wound than she'd expected.
Her tense shoulders finally unwind just a bit and she makes herself put the sea out of her mind. Eventually she starts to relax and with that comes humming -- and eventually singing. There aren't any lyrics, just the las and hums of a lullaby she faintly remembered her mother humming to sing her to sleep as a baby.
[ He should leave. He should leave right now. If a human finds him he's sure he's doomed. Eaten, hung on a wall, kept in captivity... doomed. She hasn't noticed him, so if he swims away now he'll be safe!
But just as he's about to flee he hears her singing.
Carefully, he looks out from behind the rock to see better. ]

[ She's not just singing now. She's got her picnic set out and with the sun as hot as it is, she feels like working up an appetite before she settles in to eat. So she steps off the blanket and... it looks like she's... getting... undressed-- Oh wait, she has a modest little white swimsuit under that sundress. Get your mind out of the gutter.
She's still humming as she makes her way over to the water and for a moment, Dia just lets the surf wash over her ankles. She's smiling in the unreserved sort of way people only do when they think they're unobserved. As she wades out into the sea, she starts singing properly. Quietly at first, like she's still a little self concious but the more she relaxes, the louder she sings.
What a relief she's alone. If she wasn't this sure would be embarrassing, wouldn't it? ]
[ Now that he's actually looking at her... she's pretty. Like. Really pretty. And her singing is really pretty too, to the point that he wonders if she's really human. He feels his face getting hot with a blush and he can't take his eyes off her.
Then she comes into the water.
He freezes, knowing now is when he should swim away and get out of here, but he can't move... ]
[ The water's wonderfully warm. It's been hot enough today that she doesn't hesitate to wade in until her feet are barely touching the sand. There's a little rock not too far from the beach that she decides to aim for -- it looks perfect for sitting on to take a little sun before she does anymore swimming.
She's a little worried her bare feet are going to encounter shards of shell or something with stingers but the further out she gets the more she feels like she's the only thing actually here in the water. It's nice. She doesn't even have to worry about running into another swimmer. ]
[ ... or so she thinks. Because when she finally gets close enough to the rock to be able to see around it... it looks like there's something there. She squints. And then she freezes and her eyes open so wide.
Is... is that... a person? Staring right at her?
Just. Give her a moment to process that she was, in fact, being spied on. ]
[ You know that noise bulls make in cartoons just before they bumrush someone and send them flying in a fit of rage?
That's the noise coming out of Dia's mouth right now as she comes rocketing through the water right at him. You'd think a mermaid would be able to outswim a human but when it's Dia Kurosawa on the warpath you might as well just pick a god and pray.
She launches herself right at him in a tackle that probably would've thrown them both to the ground if they were on land. As it stands, it just means that Dia just gets to lock her arms around him like she's half a second away from starting to throttle. ]
Who put you up to this sort of shameful behaviour?! Did you see me approach and decide you would sieze the chance to spy on me while I was alone? Or was there a group of you here waiting for someone to arrive?!
[ She's not letting go. In fact the more he thrashes around, the tighter her grip gets. ]
I should have you dragged back onto land and arrested! Tried! FLOGGED! I MIGHT EVEN DO IT MYSELF!
[ that shrieky voice sure is a bit of a contrast with how smooth and soft her singing was, huh ]
Why not warn me you were here then?! Why hide, why spy on me? There was no need for that unless you were ashamed of your own intentions!
[ she's not just clinging onto him now, she's got him in a goddamn headlock. how the hell did this delicate, pampered daughter of a rich traditional family learn how to put people in headlocks??? ]
And why be ashamed unless your intentions were lecherous?! JUST WHAT WERE YOU PLANNING?!
[ She feels something whapping against her -- for a moment she thinks it's just his feet kicking for purchase. But... those don't feel like feet. That... feels like...
Dia turns around.
That's
a
tail.
She doesn't say anything. Doesn't do anything. She just stares, unable to really take in what her eyes are seeing. Because if he has a tail, with fins and all, then that means he's... a...
Her grip finally goes a little slack out of pure shock. She's not letting him go quite yet but at least she's not practically throttling him anymore. ]
[ When he feels her grip slacken he tries to get away again, only to find he still can't. All this thrashing is tiring him out too, so he hangs in the water a bit, flapping his tail again and again against the water. ]
P-Please don't kill me... I-I can drown you, you know...!
[ It's a pretty weak threat from someone who's positive he's gonna die now ]
[ Dia lets him go. Just for a second. Just long enough for her to grab him by the shoulders and look him dead in the eyes. But she's not angry anymore (or at the very least she doesn't look it). Her eyes are huge and... they're practically sparkling.
Uh. ]
You're... you're not human, are you? You're a... a merman. Is that what you are?!
[ please be a merman and not just a creep lurking in the water ]
[ he flips his tail out of the water again... then tries to sink back into the water as much as her grip will let him. Like he's trying to make himself look small. ]
She splutters a bit -- her voice cracks again as she talks but she doesn't sound angry anymore at all. Just wrongfooted. It's one thing to have encountered a stranger out here and yet another to have run into a merman of all things. ]
I'm not going to eat you, for goodness sake! I'm trying to talk to you!
[ what would mermaid even taste like? just thinking that grosses her out a bit. ]
[ ... Okay. Good. She's not trespassing or something. She was a little worried there about the potential for getting into trouble with mermaids of all things for taking a dip in the wrong part of the sea. But... well, this is the only one that's seen her and she can hardly credit him as a threat.
(Sorry Choromatsu)
She gives a huff and lets go of his shoulders before looking away. It... almost looks like she's going a little red. Is she actually embarrassed. ]
I see. Well then. I suppose I... should offer an apology for the... misunderstanding, in that case.
[ a long pause. you kind of get the impression these are words she doesn't use particularly often. ]
... I'm sorry.
[ ... "for putting you into a headlock and screaming at you" ]
